“Well, we’re going to have to see what happens,” [Trump] said Wednesday in response to a reporter’s question about leaving office peaceably if he loses. The norm-breaking statement, which the President has reiterated since, has been dismissed as flippant by Republican allies, rather than threatening. But to many scholars and analysts who follow political violence, the president’s comments sound like a call to arms.

American cities are already on edge. Upset protesters have routinely taken to the streets this summer, facing off with police officers, federal agents and counter-protestors. Hours after the president spoke, for instance, there were violent clashes in Louisville, Ky., after a grand jury brought no charges for Breonna Taylor’s death. Two police officers were shot and wounded, 46 people were taken into custody and groups of right-wing militiamen were seen on the street clad in body armor and carrying assault rifles.

While Latino communities show similar susceptibility to mental illness as the general population, unfortunately, we experience disparities in access to treatment and in the quality of treatment we receive. This inequality puts us at a higher risk for more severe and persistent forms of mental health conditions.
Approximately 33% of Latino adults with mental illness receive treatment each year compared to the U.S. average of 43%.  Without treatment, certain mental health conditions can worsen and become disabling."

For instance, a poll by Latino Decisions in 2016 showed that while 95 percent of Hispanics thought people should be required to pass a background check in order to buy a gun, far fewer, about 60 percent, felt that Congress should consider any new laws restricting gun ownership."

"California residents who own handguns are four times more likely to commit suicide than their neighbors who don’t own them, according to a study led by California researchers and released Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.“Firearm owners were not more likely to die of other causes than non-owners,” said the study’s lead author, David Studdert, a professor of both medicine and the law at Stanford University. “As a matter of fact, they were a little bit less likely. “
While women typically have far lower risk of suicide overall, this research found that they are 35 times more likely to kill themselves when they own a handgun."

"An ex-city police officer is fighting his 2018 firing for trying to control a group of black and Hispanic youth by telling them he was “trigger happy,” a city attorney said.
Stephen Barone, who is white, is one of two Hartford officers seeking to be reinstated to the force. According to Deputy Corporation Counsel Alexandra Lombardi, the city is also awaiting a decision in the case of Robert Lanza, a white, former Hartford detective who was fired in January 2018 after he used racial slurs during a drunken driving arrest in Plainville."
